年轻的单亲妈妈钟灵，为治疗儿子可乐的先天白血病，带着可乐回到七年前因为跟前任韩东来分手而离开的城市。恰逢韩东来出席发布会，得知钟灵回到海市，立即前往车站寻找消失多年的深爱之人。可乐在医院误打误撞碰到韩东来，觉得他很像母亲画册中男人……。艾司·范杜拉（乔什·佛雷特 Josh Flitter 饰）是一个12岁没有什么运动天赋的小胖子，也许遗传了父亲的基因，他从小便热爱动物，尤其喜欢帮助小动物们排忧解难。为了迎合他的爱好，艾司的母亲梅丽莎（安·库萨克 Ann Cusack 饰）专门找到一份野生动物园的工作。不过，艾司似乎有些过于痴迷，他的某些行为举止甚至都跟动物相近，这令梅丽莎很是困扰，她无数次规劝儿子要让自己变得正常一些。艾司虽然小心奉行，但仍然技痒难耐。 某天，动物园中来自中国的熊猫宝宝叮当被人盗走，而所有的证据都指向梅丽莎。为了帮妈妈洗脱罪名，艾司在爷爷的鼓励下，开始踏上寻找叮当的征程……。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
